Nimue - August 11
I woke up with a screaming headache in a room packed with mongrelmen and three adventurers. They were negotiating looting the body of a fallen comrade. Once dragged into the room by a mongrelman, the body was Irulan. I was too late. She'd saved me when I was a slave, and I'd come to this hellhole to help her. She'd been having horrible visions of the world ending, starting from here.
I snagged a cloak to remember her by, since they were divvying things up. I agreed to lug a rope ladder out for them, since it would help me get out as well. It's really heavy. One of the mongrelmen came back, saying he had lured undead north to a “big room” I have a dim memory of coming in, and I'm afraid the way out is through a big room. The ranger, Anister, was talking about shiny rocks with the mongrelmen, who were waxing eloquent about shiny rocks. I tucked my pet rock further into my pouch, but the lizard one saw and looked at it lustfully. I very clearly gave him a “mine” look and he sort of backed off. I kept my hand over my pouch. They are occasionally useful, but I don't trust them.
Despite losing Irulan there, the adventurers decided to go back to the room where all the undead came from. Not the wisest choices from this group. Clarisse set the lantern down in an attempt to sneak a look in the room, and I saw three skeletons briefly as they moved past her and kicked the lantern out. There was more shuffling, so there was more than those three. Bancroft cast light on his shield. Three zombies had joined the three skeletons. Somehow running was not the first option for this group. I see now why Irulan died. After some debate about the odds, they did decide on a fighting retreat. Clarisse wall-ran past the undead, and around the corner. I threw a purple magic missile at the closest skeleton and ducked around the corner.
The undead started pushing past Bancroft and Anister. Curious, they're smarter than normal. They shouldn't be doing that. Bancroft tried to turn undead, but the undead screamed at him, and the prayer failed. Bancroft shoved through to stand before the door above the stairs. Clarisse unsuccessfully tried to light a lantern. I cast light on my dagger pommel and moved off the stairs. The guys moved up. I cast mage armor and kept moving. Some of the zombies seemed intent on coming after me, it was unnerving. I ran up into the hallway, but saw more zombies up ahead. Unlike normal zombies, the ones led off came straight back instead of wandering around aimlessly looking for food. I tried to cast magic missile, but it fizzled out. I was not trained for combat magic.
We were surrounded on both sides, trying to shove our way past to get out. Anister and I made it past and started for the way out. I don't know where Clarisse and Bancroft are.
