Nimue - Sept 15
A halfling called Wig walked into the barrow as we were leaving, saying he was a roustabout and sent to help us. We went back to town for tools, and headed back out the next day. Anister saw boot tracks outside the barrow, but didn't think they went inside. Anister came up with one of his usual complicated plans to erase our old tracks and make fake tracks going somewhere else.
As Bancroft and Anister were about to work on the secret door, I heard whispering at the barrow entrance. I shushed them and told them we had company. The whispering group came down, but I warned them off. Surprisingly, they actually left like reasonable people. That's rare. Bancroft and Anister broke open the secret door. There were stairs leading down. No way to hide the opening, so we have one chance to grab whatever's down there.
The stairs came down into an intersection of hallways. The north door had water dripping from it. An open area to the southwest. The iron door to the west was locked. Anister picked the door with a couple of my hairpins. Anister got hit by a poison needle as he opened the door. Being a sturdy dwarf, he shook the effects off, with Bancroft's help. There was a sarcophagus on one side, and a gargoyle on the other with clawed hands outstretched. We suspected it would animate if we touched the sarcophagus. Anister wound a rope around it's feet and arms to tie them together, and stuck a sack on its head. They started to tackle prying up the sarcophagus lid. They slid the lid slightly to try to peek inside, and then the inhabitant lifted the lid off itself. A mummy with arcane sigils on the wrappings, wearing a gold headband and holding a gold scepter with black opals.
Bancroft tried to turn it, with the darkness almost swallowing Sylanus' light even though the green light was especially bright, but the mummy turned and scrabbled at the wall. I cast mage armor on myself. Bancroft cast cleansing weapon and attacked the mummy. I threw a magic missile at it. Then it kept trying to touch Bancroft with a rotting black finger. We ran, but it followed us. Bancroft specifically. It started touching him again, but Bancroft withstood the necrosis. Barely. We ran. It followed us up the stairs, but did not enter the barrow. We headed back to town. The mummy is too dangerous for us. Hopefully it's too dangerous for the other adventuring groups too. Also hopefully, it goes back to sleep so we can check other rooms.
