Nimue - August 19

Anister and I sprinted for the exit. I managed the climb up the rope, fueled by adrenaline. We waited up top to see if Bancroft came. Eventually some mongrelmen came, dragging Bancroft. We threw the rope ladder down for him. He wasn't able to heal himself, so I stowed the ladder back in my pack and we set out for town with Anister haranguing him about running the opposite direction. While walking, Anister looked at the bowl of shiny rocks, and discovered that the bowl was gold, although the shiny rocks were indeed just shiny rocks. Anister and I split the rocks up to bring back to the mongrelmen in thanks for saving me and Bancroft.

Bancroft went straight to bed. Anister and I got drunk. We were hoping to hire a torchbearer the next morning, but just men at arms with dogs. The halfling wore a codpiece, impractical clothes, and named his dog Chick Magnet. Adorable dog. Unfortunate owner. Total sleaze. Other one was a human with a suspicious skull pendant and a dog named Mutt. It stormed just as we got to the barrows, so we ran inside before we got too soaked.

We were trying to decide where to explore, when a skeleton walked down the hallway. With a gem in it. It killed Tarford with one hit, despite us arming him with chain mail and a shield. Anister calmed Mutt. The halfling ran. I stayed way back and threw purple magic missiles at it. Then it killed Mutt. Anister bloodied it with a well-placed arrow. I threw another magic missile, but again only doing piddly damage. Bancroft dematerialized it, and I threw another bolt at the gem to crack it. Instead of having a minute to destroy the gem, it immediately rematerialized. Three times. It came for me. Bancroft tried to turn it, and made it flee. The wisest option would be to go back to town. We lost both henchmen and dogs. We weren't able to kill it after multiple attempts. But, again, logic and wisdom are not these two's strong point. However, in this case they were right, they dropped it and destroyed the gem. Anister picked up the gem fragments.

I started feeling like “nothing” was coming. The "nothing" that means absence of life. That meant somet really bad undead. We needed to get out now. Bancroft stripped Tarford's body. Anister tracked the halfling, who went east in the dark. We found the halfling and the dog dead from a crossbow bolt trap in a room full of burial alcoves that didn't look completely searched.
