Irulan - July 28
I whacked one of the zombies that wasn't running, and it's wobbling, but still up. It and the other one went for Anister again, but both missed as he clung to the back of the statue. Anister dropped it, but it got back up. Bancroft hit it, dropped it, and it stayed down this time. I narrowly avoided the statue to drop the other zombie, but it got back up and again went for Anister. Bancroft tapped it and it stayed down. Bancroft wanted to tag team the afraid zombies, but not yet because he had things he wanted to do. Sigh. I waited next to the zombie with my sword raised. Then the light spell went off. So Bancroft recast it, and I'm still waiting. Anister got bored and shot it, so I swung, and we dropped it. One zombie left. I moved up and bloodied it. It went for Anister. Bancroft healed him. I pushed past everyone to wack it, and dropped it.
We went back to searching the room. Clarisse found a gem on one of the zombies. Anister opened the east door, scaring a bunch of mongrelmen. I told them Stickman was lonely up north and maybe they could go get him before we shut the door. We opened the south door to find stairs going down to a landing with stairs on all sides doing down. Clarisse heard talking from the east behind a yellow curtain. They seemed to be arguing. Anister saw giant rat prints down the east stairs. Double doors to the west. We went south. There was a smashed in door to the left, door to the right, and hallway continuing on. The smashed room had a bas relief of a setting sun. We didn't find anything in that room.
I listened at the first right door, and heard scraping against stone. The other right side door was slightly ajar, and Clarisse peeked in, but it was also empty. We checked the left side door. Clarisse picked the lock. It was also empty. The hallway ended in a black curtain, and there were passages left and right. To the left, there was a door on the right, and more curtains. Anister said the door was swollen. He heard more scraping against stone noises. There was rubble in the east hallway. The curtain was over an alcove with rubble. As Clarisse and Anister were peeking behind the curtain, a shadow came off the wall towards them. Bancroft and Anister ran screaming up the hallway, dropping everything they were holding. I saw a headless man coming for Clarisse and I.
I lit a torch, but it seemed dimmer than it should. We decided to follow our fleeing companions. Clarisse picked up their swords as she ran by. I tried shaking Anister, but he didn't snap out of it. Anister ran to the left at the landing. Bancroft ran upstairs. They were both yelling and going to attract the attention of everything in the dungeon, so I decided it was time to just make for the exit. Clarisse shoved Bancroft into the wall, and that woke him up. We went back for Anister, hoping he would also no longer be afraid. I went back to the door, and didn't hear him yelling, which seemed a good sign. I was waiting for Bancroft and Clarisse to catch up, when my torch went out suddenly, as if it was snuffed out by something.
Anister came up the stairs, but instead of leaving, we went down through the double doors to the room Anister found. It was a large room with pillars with skeletons on slabs. There were bas reliefs of roses and thorns. We started feeling tired, which seemed to mean that it was getting late and we didn't want to be out after dark when there are more and worse monsters. When we got to the exit, the rope ladder was gone. Clarisse climbed up and said it was indeed dark out. I climbed up. Anister fell. I pulled him up. Bancroft slipped. I pulled him up on the second attempt. We made it through to town without incident, miraculously. Maybe Sylvanus was actually looking out for us.
